Know Thy Self: The Power of Leaders Identifying Their Gifts and Strengths

Who are you? No really. If someone asked you that question, how would you answer? As a leader, knowing yourself is a critical asset that can transform you from an average leader into an exceptional one. Leaders who identify and harness their natural abilities enhance their effectiveness and inspire and elevate those around them.

Self-awareness is the cornerstone of effective leadership. It allows leaders to recognize strengths and leverage them to achieve their goals. By understanding their unique qualities, leaders can align their actions with their innate abilities, resulting in more authentic and impactful leadership. This alignment also fosters greater confidence and resilience as leaders navigate challenges with a deeper understanding of their capabilities.

I vividly remember a moment when I discovered that one of my strengths lies in deliberating. I was working with a senior-level team to implement and roll out a new support team structure for all mid-level teams. This was a complex and important project, with many moving parts and high expectations from stakeholders. There was pressure to deliver a seamless transition that would enhance our efficiency and support system.

While some team members were eager to jump straight into action, I instinctively felt the need to take a step back and thoroughly analyze the situation. This seemed contrary to others however, I knew that a hasty implementation could lead to additional issues down the line. My deliberative nature pushed me to consider every aspect carefully.

I began by gathering data on the current support structure, identifying pain points, and soliciting feedback from mid-level team members. This involved discussions and brainstorming sessions, where I encouraged others to voice their concerns and suggestions. My goal was to ensure that our new structure would address existing problems and be able to handle future challenges.

Realizing that deliberation was a strength, I began to integrate it into my leadership style. Here are a few ways I was able to propel my leadership forward leaning into my deliberation:

  1. Informed Decision-Making: By embracing deliberation, I ensured that decisions were based on thorough analysis rather than impulsive reactions. This led to more informed and sustainable outcomes, earning the trust and respect of my team and stakeholders.

  2. Strategic Planning: My ability to deliberate allowed me to develop comprehensive and strategic plans. I could foresee potential obstacles and devise contingency plans, which proved invaluable in navigating complex projects and driving them to successful completion.

  3. Enhanced Team Collaboration: Recognizing my strength in deliberation, I encouraged open discussions and diverse viewpoints within my team. This collaborative approach not only enriched the decision-making process but also empowered team members to share their insights and contribute to the overall success of the project.

  4. Crisis Management: During times of crisis, my deliberative nature enabled me to remain calm and composed. By carefully assessing the situation and considering various options, I could make well-reasoned decisions that mitigated risks and minimized the impact of unforeseen challenges.

Identifying and leveraging one's strengths is not just about personal growth; it also has a ripple effect on those we lead. When leaders embrace their unique gifts, they set an example for others to do the same. This authenticity fosters a culture of self-awareness and continuous improvement within the team, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

My journey of discovering the strength of deliberation has enhanced my leadership effectiveness and inspired me to encourage others to explore and embrace their unique abilities.

Let’s elevate the need to understand and harness our gifts so we can lead with purpose and make a lasting difference.
